Once again more than a month has passed. I guess old habits really never die. At the time of last post I was still up north in Townsville after just having done a little trip to visit Anna. During the weeks after that I had some presentations and two mid-term exams and I can happily announce that I passed all; not with big numbers, but still.. I passed.
Further in those week we have been getting acquainted with the new family situation in the house. In the time I was gone Carliene had also gotten lucky and met an aussie guy and ever since I got back our family has basically grown from two to three. For the rest my life pretty much consisted from the usual stuff; having good times (and goon) with friends, going out occasionally (but STILL much less than before!!!!) and counting down the days for the next happy week to come…….
Because the week in the north had been so much fun for the both of us, Anna and I decided it would be best for her to throw around the remaining backpacking plans that she had and make a detour back to Surfers. So the flight-ticket she had from Cairns (reallly north) to Sydney (south, duh, from where the final flight home would be) was swapped for two tickets from Cairns to Surfers and Surfers to Sydney. Tuesday two weeks ago was the day she arrived or – let me rephrase that – was supposed to arrive. Of all days she managed to oversleep this Tuesday and miss the flight, though it has to be said that having to get up at 3.30 in the morning for a flight is pretty freaking early. In all panic and chaos a new flight was hastily booked from Townsville to Brisbane and a bus from Cairns to Townsville. Now she had a pretty interesting day ahead of her: spending one more day in Cairns doing basically nothing, staying up till midnight to catch the bus, waiting from 5.ooam till noon at the airport in Townsville to catch the flight to Brisbane, then take a one hour train to Gold Coast and finally a 45 min. bus to Surfers Paradise. Now that sounded like something I would never want to do and I felt bad for her to have to go through all that (and, okay, I didn’t want to wait either), so I decided to rent a car for the day. That was an awesome decision!! I hadn’t driven yet in Oz and, if anything, I had never driven on the left side of the road before! I prepared by burning some CDs for the way there, by explaining Anna which train and bus she “had to take” (muwha!) and off I went to Brisbane airport to give her a surprise pick-up, while she was in the plane thinking she still had 3 more hours of train and bus rides to go… I arrived early and after about half an hour we found each other… The look on her face was priceless.
As the title says I have had the two best weeks. It doesn’t need much extra explaining that those started here; not just because she’d finally arrived, also because just to many awesome things happened. First, there was Queensday. Being the patriot that I am I wanted to keep up the tradition of partying heavily. I found my favourite Dutch beer (Bav!) for the occasion and got some other (non-Dutch) friend crazy enough to dress up in orange and join the party. The drinking started early and eventually we even ended up going out to the city. Because of my ridiculous outfit, I all of a sudden was very easy to recognise for the other Dutchies that were walking around in Surfers, so I was constantly approached. How ridiculous (or actually just awesome) will be shown by the pictures. The night was great and the hangover pretty smooth to be honest. The Monday after that, Anna and I decided to do an obligatory activity for whoever visits Australia; we went to one of the many wild life sanctuaries to complete the objective of Koala hugging and Kangaroo feeding. It was a great day and besides accomplishing the main objectives, we also got to see a lot of other typically ozzie animals (e.g. Tasmanian devils, dingo’s), I held a snake, we got shit on my noisy mini-parrots and went up in the trees for a “high roping adventure”. Awesome, check the pics!!
Then finally Friday was a biiiig day; skydiving day!! It was on both our try-before-you-die lists, so we decided to do it together right here, right now. Of course when you do such an intense activity, you have to do it right. So we booked the highest tandem dive we could find (14000 ft / 4.3km) with the longest free-fall available (about one minute). It was somewhere near Brisbane, about 100km away, but still this company arranged for a pick-up bus; sweet. After getting excited for an hour and a half in the bus, we finally arrived. We then learned we weren’t going up together, since there was only one instructor. Anna went first, while I got to bite my nails on the ground. Then it was my turn, while she got to pray for my safe return. I don’t think I need to add that we both made it and it was just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!
In the weekend we just partied and Monday was the sad day of saying goodbye again. She will fly back home in some days and I will still be “stuck” in Surfers, making the most of the remaining weeks that I have. In some way it is actually for the best, because some big tests and reports are still coming up, so I can focus on those. It is safer not to have too many distractions around anymore. It would be nice, after all, to return back to the Netherlands with the study credits of all my subjects. On top of that, my funds are running pretty low by now, because of all the cool things I did in this short period of time.
Yep, these were easily the best weeks and I don’t have the feeling I will be able to top that in the remaining time here. It’s time to get serious, wrap up my university business and, if possible, find a way to make some money. Anyway, whatever happens after this, this trip has been a blast and I have already done everything I hoped for before I stepped on the plane in Dusseldorf three months ago. I can safely say: Mission Accomplished!!
Prepare for the biggest photo collection so far. The best two weeks demanded a lot of visual coverage. As a little treat, I uploaded a video today on Youtube again.. It is my skydiving video!! Like I said: when you do something this intense, you better do it right. That’s why we bought this video as a perfect way to remember what it feels like to fall out of a plane. Click and ENJOY!!
